About My Life in Code

My grandfather was a programmer and later a manager at IBM, back in the glory days of IBM. When he retired in the early 1980's, he purchased what would be the first desktop PC I ever knew. It was an IBM PC.  It had an 8088 chipset with 640K of RAM and two 5.25 floppy disk drives. Ah those were the days.

From about the age of 10 or 12, I would play text based games on this beast. Many were written in BASIC. I had to LOAD the game before I could RUN it. My first programming feat was to hack the code of a game called Tenement.

Well, those early days led me down a path to ruin. I continued to squander much of my adolescence on computers - computer games... computer programming... BBS systems...  well you get the idea.

Flash forward and I now have a Bachelor's of Science in computer Science and over 10 years of experience as a software developer. I love it. I love software. I love problem solving and I love technology. That being said, there is an inwardly vocal part of me that I suppose may, at times, become more outwardly vocal. This part of me thinks much of the geek chic gadgets marketed to consumers are little more than flashy siphons of time and money. I like real things that solve real problems. Sue me.

At the heart of things, I love software development because I'm a creative person and a natural problem solver.

The best job I ever had was directing a diverse team audio/video producers, graphic artists, writers and programmers during production of desktop CBT (Computer Based Training) applications. They were cutting edge technologically speaking, but lots of fun graphically and visually as well. And it was great working with such an eclectic group of creative individuals.

I suppose this blog will be part opportunity to share my software trials and tribulations, triumphs and thoughts on technology in general. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I do.
